Soundfonts + YouTube Channel=Game Music Galore
I discovered soundfonts the other week, and have been inspired by the old-school sounds to make some music in the styles of the games the fonts are from. Soundfonts are basically tiny libraries full of old MIDI samples—the fun being that a lot of the soundfonts you can locate easily online are the actual sounds the composers used back in the day on the soundtracks. For a game music fiend like myself, this is super fun.
The first video (above) is one I composed in the style of Ishikawa Jun, the composer of the Kirby series, using the Kirby’s Dreamland 3 soundfont.
In the second video (below), I used the soundfont from the classic SNES game Super Metroid to create an “space game opening sequence-like piece”, and decided to lay it on top of the opening video sequence from the actual game.
I posted both videos to my newly created YouTube channel, so if you enjoy, please consider subscribing to check out more music as I post it going forward!
