Release: The Whipping Boy Soundtrack

I’m happy to announce that the score I composed for GRIN Films’ short film The Whipping Boy (2023) is now available for listening on all music streaming platforms! It was an enjoyable challenge scoring this film, and I learned a lot from the process. The film is full of juxtapositions, from the ambiguous time setting to the stark leaps from dark to humorous, and this presented unique opportunities for composition. As there is a string quartet featured in the background in the film, I used that as a cue to make the instrumentation largely string-focused as to add to the sense of immersion in this unique and often unsettling world created by director Victor Oly and writer Ben Milligan. I tried to make the emotional nature of the score be fluid and flexible, able to divert suddenly from more traditional harmonic palettes into more sinister and murky colours without jarring the viewer too much. I’m proud of what I was able to contribute to this short film which so many talented and hardworking people brought to life.
